Single Releases 22/02/2010

Single Releases - 22/02/2010

This morning I had the awful task of cutting the singles list down to an acceptable amount, not to dissimilar from picking the teams during P.E lessons back in school. If this were a school team, it certainly would be a teenage creatine junky infested line-up.

I hope you enjoy my scribbles of what is slightly (or greatly for me) more acceptable for the charts this week.

Single Of The Week

This week has been pretty difficult to pick a team captain or in other words, a song in particular that I will rally me onto the weekend. I have tried and here goes....

The Opposite Of Adults EP - Chiddy Bang

Before attacking me for picking a recycled hit of MGMT, just insert into your stereo and blaze at top volume and tell me you wouldn't like this? Them Blue Peter 'Cook Book' instructions aside, we have a very worthy hop-hop track that is lyrically sound on an EP that has literally cutup a surf-indie-druggy classic and made it there own. Nice Job.

I predict relative 'slash' deserved success in the charts for this banger. Expect it to mash nicely into the local russian owned nightclub, selling those ghastly VK's, that all us kids seem to love going to.

Heaven Can Wait - We The Kings

Pop punk heroes 'We The King' return with another single that will instantly remind us of their 'Skyward Avenue' hit. Never a bad thing I say. They seem to have remained the same; still uplifting, still inspiring and that unchanging formula for good songs.

They have a new record out soon titled 'Smile Kid' and should in fact, be a hit for pop boppers and kids in skinny jean wearers alike. The more I listen to this song is directly proportionate to the amount of times I want to listen to it again. I think what I am trying to get at , in a not so nerdy way, is to say that it is an addictive little number. Bring on the next record.

Never Be Your Woman - Wiley featuring Emile Sand

Wiley certainly has a place in my youth. Through history (in a tour guide voice) he has an uncompromising flow that he never changed that has quite simply made him evergreen. Being green aside, the backdrop to his show has changed; garage to grime, grime to funky and now funky to mainstream pop next, perhaps?

This song is being burned out amongst my friends at the moment. Fun and friendly, and will certainly rival other hits like 'Where In My Rolex' And 'Cash In My Pocket.'

I'm Turning Into You - wheels On Fire

Although I do not have a lot of words to describe Wheels On Fire's latest release I will say one thing, and that is that it is quite simply 'Perfect.' Has all the gritty requirements of an indie song including that musical sweat and blood. It certainly gets the 'unashamed' single of the week title for me if of course I had one.

Light It Up - Blood Red Shoes

So Blood Red Shoes made a new record. Did Blood Red Shoes recreate themselves? No. Do I like them? A bit. Perhaps I am being hard, but Blood Red Shoes tend to repeat repetition in everything they do, that quite simply frazzles my brain into submission. To say they work with hooks is an industry understatement. Regardless, a decent indie rock sound transcending through-out, and difficult second record apparent in this single - still a decent listen.

Close But No Cigar!

Morning Light - Girls

First-Rate Pretender - Yeti Lane

Resistance- Muse

----------------

Not So Close, Not Even A Cigarette

You Overdid It Doll - The Courteeners

Nothing Like You - frightened Rabbit

Glass Figures - Motion Picture Soundtrack

Your Turn

Is there anything you'd like me to have a look at?

I am always interested in anything new, borrowed or blue but I don't do marriage.

Thanks to those that stayed with me through what seems like an infinity of text.

Cheerio. Rick

MySpace Discoveries #1

Myspace Discoveries #1

No different too anyone else, I get added by about 4 bands a day on Myspace. I cannot help thinking the word friend has been cheapened by social networking sites. Regardless, credit due when it's due, it's sparked the creation of my new regular section on my blog which aims to uncover treasure.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Avermen
http://www.myspace.com/avermenband

Avermen are a band with that style that meets perfect simplicity head on. Comparisons, perhaps can be drawn across the pop music board, but whatever your musical preference, Avermen will be a safe choice to play when your chavy brother, voilin playing sister and hip hop granny comes together in your car. They simply cannot offend - For proof and five of my virtual pounds, listen to their 'Misty Mountain' track (and the intro too it) and tell me otherwise.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Gills And Wings
http://www.myspace.com/gillsandwings

Picture this - Panic! At The Disco, the second album (The druggy Beatle one)after the first half of the record, minus any of that silly face paint along with any of that loathing you feel for any self confessed EMO and you are not too far off Gills And Wings. I worry that connection has sold the band short - which it shouldn't because that album was great and not a cheap thrill like the debut record. So, Gills and Wings ... Listen to 'Catastrophe' and you'll see pop and something a bit extra - I think they call it emotion. They certainly have something - Watch out for this band.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

As I said, I want to start writing reviews on Myspace bands ... so if you have recommendations I would very much like you to put their website my way.

Singles 15/02/2010

Here are the singles of the week. R.E.M 'Everybody Hurts' was an annoying song sung by an annoying band, and now to make things worse, it is now song by a bunch cling-ons who some how manage to make it seem worse. Am I the only one that thinks this song is inappropriate? It belittles the people of Haiti in my eyes, anyway, I think I prefer to give to charity without supporting this song and their careers.

So the singles ...

Single Of The Week

Romance Is Boring - Los Campesinos! (Wichita)

This weeks single of the week was always going be like picking yours mates over your girlfriend to watch the football. Sure I am bias but not without reason. Yesterday see Los Campesinos! release their second single off their newest record released two weeks ago. Highly tipped and in all honesty, fully equipped.

So this song, gets thumbs alone for having an extreme 'big teeth Stacy off X-Factor lookalike' prancing about, and secondly for the timing of such single around Valentines day. Before anyone says anything, big teeth can be resourceful around things carrots - The imagination boggles on. The title alone sounds fun, the song is fun and probably 9/10 true. Pretty much the most 'pop' you'll ever see from this band, and is addictive after only a few plays. Also, possibly one of the best B-Sides for quite some time in 'Too Many Flesh Suppers.' A worthy listen 7.9/10.

Scissors - Liars (Mute)

Not into long drawn out songs? Don't listen. If your still with me then you are my friend & this song will be an audio friend. I think this song is perfectly made. Great breaking up of the song through-out, calm one second & high tempo the next. Liars are generally a great band and this song does nothing to confuse my thoughts. 7.6/10

A Rumour In Africa - Errors (Rock Action Records)

I looked through 10 singles and this was my third and final inclusion. I wasn't sure about this little dance number. Certainly well made with a certain elegance. I think the genre if describable has been very fine tuned recently, and tunes like us are coming out in a sort of 'homosexuals of the 90's' manner. I think this song is difficult to offend and certain provides the weapon for half drunk-half crap dancer dance with the potential backdrop to show unseen shapes. I loved it 7.3/10.

Extra Onion Rings?

Tour Dates - Emarosa

This morning I got a very polite email from Kentucky's finest rock band Emarosa, stating their latest UK tour dates in preparation for their new record due to be released before their Summer Warp Tour Inclusion. To say excitement is brewing is an understated as I pull over my Emarosa tee three months in advance.

If you are unaware of this band you really should as they are highly sophisticated both lyrically and instrumentally.

Los Campesinos! Too Many Flesh Suppers

Let's not make any mistakes here, Los Campesinos are the 'petit filous' of music. Possibly the tastiest band around yet so small it bothers you just like it's simile. Regardless of size, Los Campesinos! released their latest record 'Romance Is Boring' at the start of February with a roaring free set up in Rough Trade. Shakey at times - the showed only a small part to it's potential that will certainly be fulfilled once they tour the country, followed by Europe in march and the U.S in April.

To rewet the interest (if needed) I thought I'd introduce you too a perfect little number that didn't quite make the album. Lead singer Gareth stated it was a great song but just couldn't be made to fit in with the other 15 tracks. The is titled 'Too Many Flesh Suppers' and is incredibly moving.

(Not available right now)

If you like, it can be purchased off the iTunes store for just 79p.

SINGLES080210

Single Releases 08/02/2010

This weeks collection of singles very much reminded me of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, not just because I'm re-reading the Harry Potter books, but instead due to some them being rather fruity whilst others, pure ear wax. I picked out my favorite five of the week (in order to not overload you) and provided the links to some others afterwards like desserts if you still have room. Take your time to have a listen and let me know your opinions.

Japanese Voyeurs – ‘That Love Sound’

I gave this song my 'single of the week' (spare the drum rolls) due to the fact I consider it 'cool' which may seem vague but sometimes it's so hard to describe why something is good. I will still attempt to explain. Whilst sounding fairly generic it picks up and drops through-out keeping a level of excitement. There are some interesting music interludes combined with an intriguing vocal lead. 7.5/10

Placebo – ‘Bright Lights’

A profession release from Placebo! I have never followed the band intensely like a lot of people that where black make-up do instead have admired them from afar as you have to commended them for their perfect flow that seems to make them easy to listen too. This single is certainly no different. I have a feeling the pop punk fans will fully accept this song as one of their own, and quite possibly a decent filler in the chart positions. 7.3/10

teenagersintokyo – ‘Peter Pan’

Question marks can be asked about my musical tastes when I declare that I am a sucker for this factory line repetitive indie/electro pop beat which has the classical yet slightly droned slow vocals. It screams 'party' whilst hunting for the vodka jelly. Perhaps that's just me but this song scores a clean & respectable 6.9/10 for me.

Field Music - 'Them That Do Nothing'

This song is my musical definition of 'tidy.' It is like that person back in school that was neither your friend or foe. A nice acquaintance where when presented too we take it or leave it without too much opinion. No love, no hate. 6.9/10

Nice Nice - ‘See Waves’

Music today always has songs like this just 'hanging about' since MGMT. Influences of such jangle sees psychedelic trip with afro beat, or so it seems - then again, it's your drug trip so you decide. A decent listen, 7.1/10.

Still Hungry?

M.A.N.D.Y. Vs. Booka Shade – ‘Donut’

Zinc ft. Ms Dynamite – ‘WILE OUT’

tUnE-yArDs – ‘Real Live Flesh’
